As the winter nights get chillier, it's time to talk layers. In the simplest sense, piling blankets and throws onto the bed will help you stay snug, but layering textiles in your bedroom will also add important visual depth and texture to your space.

The British Blanket Company's stylist, Bethan John, shares her top tips on giving your bedroom a sumptuous makeover using fabrics and textiles.

Contrast is key when layering textiles on the bed

Successfully styling your bed is all about having a range of textures that contrast with one another. Think crisp Egyptian bed linen topped with a chunky wool blanket, or a matte velvet headboard styled with shiny silk cushions.

Achieve an instant transformation with cushions and throws

You don't have to completely re-decorate to give your bedroom a dramatic new look. Carefully-chosen cushions, wool throws and curtains instantly add colour and pattern just where you need it. This is your opportunity to dip your toe into a new world of colour without long-term commitment!

Add a hotel-inspired sitting area

If you have space, a comfortable bedroom chair can be a lovely addition and offers another chance to get creative with fabrics. Look for compact shapes that won't take up too much space, such as the small, but perfectly formed, Mia armchair from SofaSofa in linen or velvet. Just make sure it doesn't become a dumping spot for laundry!

Dark is the new light

While you might think of a sanctuary-style bedroom as white and bright, when you want to create a cosy atmosphere, dark colours work best. Moody paint shades in ultra-matte finishes accentuate textures in fabrics and make bold colours pop.

Don't forget the floor

When it comes to bedroom flooring, I don't think you can't beat carpet, especially in winter. It's worth spending a little extra on carpet that contains wool, as wool is warmer and more durable than synthetic fibres. Patterned carpets are making a comeback, especially for the bedroom. This William Morris Liberty fabric carpet is a beautiful example that's bang on trend.
