Size & Colour

Our throws come in three sizes: small, large and XL. You can find out more on our Blanket Size Guide.

Dimensions vary slightly from design-to-design so please refer to the individual product page for details. You will also find a size guide on each product page.

Woven wool fabrics have natural stretch and give due to the elasticity of wool fibres and the loose nature of woven fabrics. All dimensions quoted are therefore approximate and a small amount of size variation should be expected.

These are our suggestions for choosing the most suitable throw size for your bed. Please keep in mind that not all mattresses are standard sizes and that the mattress depth also plays a part in the overall effect. A tip is to cut a piece of string to the length of your chosen throw, and use this to judge how it will look on your bed.

Small throws: work well as a narrow runner on the end of a double bed or single bed.

Large throws: work well on double beds or folded on single beds.

XL throws: work well on double beds or king size beds.

Please refer to the individual product pages for the exact dimensions and size guide diagrams.

Yes, the longer dimension does include the length of the fringe. The tassels are approx. 10cm on both ends.

Our photos are taken and edited professionally to ensure the colours on our website are matched as accurately as possible. Unfortunately though, we can't control the screen settings of individual devices, so colours may display differently on your computer or mobile screen. If the blanket or scarf arrives and isn't the colour you hoped, simply keep it in the bag and we'll be happy to refund you in accordance with our returns policy.

Care & Maintenance

Many of our small and large wool blankets are machine washable, please check the individual product page. Merino lambswool throws and scarves are dry clean only. Please refer to our detailed Wool Care Guide and follow the instructions carefully as wool may shrink or stretch if washed incorrectly.

Wool is a natural material with fluffy fibres that will mesh together under friction to form bobbles, called pilling. This is normal and removing bobbles periodically should be considered part of maintaining and caring for wool textiles, not a fault. For full instructions, please read our detailed Wool Care Guide.

Wool can shrink or stretch if washed or dried incorrectly, so please read our Wool Care Guide for detailed instructions. Our wool products have passed independent laboratory tests to certify that they perform well when laundered according to the instructions. Unfortunately, we can't take responsibility for damage that occurs during washing or drying.

Merino wool throws and scarves are dry clean only.

Finding knots in the warp threads is a normal part of weaving blankets on traditional looms in small batches as our skilled artisans knot the threads by hand. It's really to be considered part of the charm of artisanal weaving vs. mass production and we embrace the traditional method of doing things by hand.

Materials & Manufacture

Merino lambswool is softer, finer and lighter than regular sheep's wool. Both types of wool have their advantages, which are explained in detail in our Why Wool guide.

The British Blanket Company is proud to weave all our blankets, throws and scarves in the British Isles (UK and Ireland). We currently weave at three traditional mills in Wales, Yorkshire and Ireland. Click to read more about our weaving heritage.

Where does our wool come from?

We source most of the wool for our blankets from New Zealand and South Africa. They produce the best quality material for blankets because they specifically breed sheep for the softness and fineness of their fleece. They also have very high animal welfare standards, so the sheep roam freely and the wool is mulesing-free.

Our 100% British Wool collection uses wool sourced exclusively from UK farms. This range of blankets and throws uses fibre from Suffolk and Romney sheep, traditional breeds that are prized for the softness of their wool. We are proud to have achieved a license from British Wool which guarantees the quality and origin of all the wool in this collection with traceability back to British farms.

Yes, our merino wool is mulesing free. It comes from New Zealand and South Africa, where the practice of mulesing is banned.

The yarn in our traditional wool blankets comes from sheep breeds that are not subject to mulesing.

This is a tricky question with no simple answer! Technically our merino lambswool blankets are softest as the fibres are longer and finer, giving a smoother finish. However, many customers love our thicker and fluffier pure wool throws, which remain our best-sellers. Both types of wool have their advantages, which we explore in more detail here.

Gifts & Packaging

No, we don’t include prices on the paperwork for orders shipping to UK addresses.

For orders shipping outside of the UK, we may be obliged to include prices for customs purposes.

Yes, there is a box at the checkout where you can write a short gift message. This is written on a postcard and included in your package.

The packing slip that goes into the parcel does not include prices on it, except for orders shipped outside of the UK where we are obliged to include prices for customs purposes.

UK customers can purchase our colourful Gift Box for Blankets.

Why not add some items from our Cosy Gifts collection to your box to make the gift even more special?

Gift boxes and Cosy Gifts can't be shipped to non-UK customers, sorry about this.

Our standard packaging for blankets and scarves is thick paper mailing bags with a patterned design, so our parcels look attractive arriving in the post.

Please be aware that our mailing bags include our brand name on the outside.

Larger orders will be packaged in cardboard boxes.

We are always striving to make our business more eco-friendly and all our outer packaging can now be re-used and recycled.
