Pink interior design ideas for summer 2023

Pink is undoubtedly the colour of the moment, but introducing pink into your home can be daunting. We’ve enlisted the help of interior design expert Grace King of Studio Rey to show us how to make pink work perfectly in an inspiring guest blog.

Over to you Grace!

As an interior designer and a keen colour enthusiast I often use shades of pink in my interior design schemes – from playful hot pink accessories to soft plaster pink painted walls. Depending on the shade, pink is a colour that can stimulate or calm but always exudes joy and warmth.

Hot pink was a key colour trend in fashion in 2022 and made a bold statement in the spring / summer shows of Alexander Mcqueen, Valentino and Versace. In 2023 this colour has trickled into interiors with ‘Viva Magenta’ being named a Pantone colour of the year. And as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie Movie bursts onto cinema screens this month, Barbiecore is taking the world by storm, with its fabulous fuchsia costumes and set design. But if Barbie pink is too much for you, don’t panic, pink interiors do not always have to be bold!

Read on for my pick of the best pink interior design ideas that will add warmth and joy to your home interior. I'll share my favourite pink paints, this season’s pick of pink home accessories and a pink mood board which will show you how to successfully incorporate pink in to your interior design scheme.

The best pink paint colours for your home

Are you ready to dive in to the pink colour trend but are unsure of which pink paint colour is best for you? Read on for three of my favourite pinks, from soft plaster shades to rich and earthy tones and learn how best to use them in your home.

A soft pink interior can be calm and tranquil and provide a timeless and sophisticated atmosphere in a bedroom or bathroom space. When working with softer paint colours I often use the same tone on the walls, ceiling and woodwork which creates a clean, calm and contemporary feel. My favourite soft pink paints are Edward Bulmer’s Jonquil and Farrow & Ball’s Setting Plaster, these plaster pinks have become a key colour trend in recent years and it is not difficult to see why! They are shades that sit between pink and yellow/ beige which make them the perfect timeless pinks for contemporary and period homes.

pink kitchen cabinetry

A bold pink paint can be used to great effect in your home. I typically use bolder shades in smaller doses when designing large open plan interiors such as kitchens and living rooms, so as not to overwhelm the space. Why not try using a bold pink shade on kitchen cabinetry and combine this with neutral painted walls and raw, natural finishes such as oiled oak and microcement? One of my favourite bold pink shades is Little Greene’s Ashes of Roses which is a beautiful earthy red-based pink.

When decorating smaller, darker rooms in our homes the temptation is to use light colours and finishes in an attempt to brighten the space. My suggestion here is to embrace the darkness! Why not bring an earthy, terracotta pink paint colour such as Farrow & Ball Sulking Room Pink in to a dark south facing snug? This will create a cosy cocooning effect and the warmth of the paint colour will balance the cool light temperature of a south facing room.

Top pink home accessories for summer 2023

Home accessories are the perfect way to bring the pink colour trend in to your home without investing in a redecoration project. From wool blankets to art prints, these perfectly pink homewares will add a pop of pretty and playful pink in to your home.

Garden Flowers Hollyhock merino wool blanket from The British Blanket Company

This beautiful pink throw is a modern take on a traditional Scottish checked pattern blanket and is the perfect pink shade to lift any home interior. It is made from super soft merino wool and is the ideal pink accessory for your living room to wrap up with on a chilly autumn afternoon or drape over your shoulders on those long summer nights in the garden. If a softer pink is more your style, opt for the more subtle Heather pink colourway, also from the Garden Flowers collection.

This two-tone pink print is by talented Bath based designers The Campbell Collection and is hand-printed onto recycled cotton paper in Jaipur. The hand-printed quality and recycled paper adds texture and charm to this bold graphic print. This artwork would add a playful pink charm to your gallery wall or would look fab as a statement piece in a modern bedroom scheme.

This contemporary mirror is pink and pretty but with a unique playful twist with its wavy edge design. Why not position this mirror above a bathroom basin with a colourful feature wall light to add flair to a bathroom scheme.

A pink mood board to inspire your home decoration project

Feeling convinced by pink? To help your next step I've put together a mood board with some of my favourite go to interior suppliers for paint, tiling and textiles to show you how to incorporate the pink colour trend in to your home and successfully combine pink with other colours to create a beautiful and cohesive scheme. This is a subtle scheme and would work well in an airy, open kitchen and living space. I have combined soft plaster pink paint finishes with natural oak timber, bold sea green tiling and textural fabrics.
