waffle weave wool blanket collection stacked on a bench - The British Blanket Co

There’s a lot to love about a waffle weave blanket, and our Totterdown Collection is one we’re especially proud of here at The British Blanket Company. With its textured surface and joyful colour palette, this design brims warmth, both literally and visually. We named the collection after Totterdown in south Bristol, a neighbourhood full of painted houses and creative spirit. Just like the area that inspired it, these blankets are bold, cheerful and full of character.

Form Meets Function

What makes a waffle blanket stand out is the way it feels, just as much as how it looks. The weave creates little pockets of air that help trap warmth, so you stay cosy without getting too hot. Our 100% wool waffle blankets are naturally breathable, insulating and incredibly comfortable across all seasons. Whether it’s layered up for winter or pulled over your lap on a breezy evening, it’s one of those go-to pieces you’ll reach for again and again.

How the Waffle Weave Works

The waffle effect is created on our historic dobby looms using a special sequence that lifts and lowers the threads in a precise pattern, giving it that distinctive honeycomb texture. It’s a clever weaving technique that adds depth without weight. The result is a blanket that feels soft and springy in your hands - lofty and satisfying, but not heavy. Waffle blankets will add quiet interest to your home when you want texture to be the hero.

Styling Your Waffle Blanket

If you’re not sure how to style one of these, my top tip is to keep it relaxed. Let the texture speak for itself. Drape it loosely over a chair, fold it at the end of the bed, or stack it in a basket by the sofa so it’s always within reach. The Totterdown collection's bold blanket colours are great for adding brightness too. Choose from our solid colour-block designs, or opt for one of our special edition dual tone styles for a quirky edge. Each one has bold tassels, which gives our waffle blankets a playful, modern feel.

The Story Behind the Totterdown Blanket Collection

The Totterdown waffle blankets are one of our Bristol-inspired collections, alongside our Clifton Herringbone blanket range. The colours came from walks around the neighbourhood which is famous for its brightly painted houses, quirky front doors and graffiti murals. The waffle's texture mirrors the grid-like pattern seen when the rows of houses are viewed from above. Like everything we make, these blankets are woven here in the UK using natural wool and traditional techniques. It’s a modern look built on traditional crafts.

The story of every design begins in The British Blanket Company's Bristol design studio. The Totterdown Collection Blankets were inspired by the neighbourhood's brightly painted houses and graffiti murals
