What size are the throws?
Our throws come in three sizes: small (approx. 120 x 150cm), large (approx. 130 x 200cm) and XL (approx. 150 x 250cm). Dimensions vary slightly from design to design, so please check the individual product page. You can find out more in our Blanket Size Guide.
Will they fit on my bed?
It depends on your bed size: for a single bed, a 120 x 150cm blanket works well, or 130 x 200cm folded over. For a double bed, try 130 x 200cm, or an XL 150 x 250cm for a more generous drape. For a king size bed, our XL gives a generous drape; on a super king it works beautifully as a runner or half spread across the foot of the bed. A simple trick is to cut a piece of string to the blanket's dimensions and lay it on your bed to see how it will sit.
Do the blanket measurements include the fringe?
Yes - all of our blanket dimensions include the length of the tassels/fringe. Because they're woven from natural fibres, dimensions are always approximate.
Are the colours accurate on the website?
Our photos are taken and edited professionally so the colours on our website are as accurate as possible. However, we can't control individual screen settings, so colours may display slightly differently on your device. If your blanket arrives and isn't the colour you hoped for, keep it unused and you can return it within 14 days through our Returns Portal.
What size throw is best for a sofa?
For draping over the back of a sofa or adding a block of colour behind your cushions, our large (130 x 200cm) or XL (150 x 250cm) throws work best - the XL gives the most generous drape on bigger sofas. For dressing a favourite armchair, our smaller armchair throws are the better fit. We don't recommend using wool blankets as seat covers, as friction can cause pilling.
How should I style a throw on my sofa?
There are a few easy ways to style a throw on your sofa: drape it softly over one arm holding a corner for a casual, rippled look; fold it neatly over the back of the sofa for a smarter finish, especially good on angular sofas; layer a couple of smaller throws over the seat cushions for extra colour; or store spares folded in a basket or ottoman so they're always to hand. The seat and back of a sofa or upholstered chair experiences a lot of friction so we don't recommend using wool blankets as seat covers, because they will wear and pill more quickly.
Is my blanket machine washable?
It depends on the material - many of our pure wool blankets are machine washable on a delicate wool cycle if labelled as such, but always check the individual product page first. Merino lambswool and alpaca blankets are dry clean only. Our Cloud Cotton blankets can be machine washed at 30°C on a short cycle. Our full Blanket Washing Guide has step-by-step instructions for every material.
How can I remove loose fibres or bobbles?
This is called pilling, and it's a normal part of owning a wool blanket - fluffy wool sheds a little at first and can develop small bobbles, especially where there's friction. Use a lint roller to lift loose fibres, then gently skim a wool care comb across the surface in one direction. After a few goes, fewer bobbles will form. Watch our short video on the Blanket Washing Guide.
How can I prevent wool from shrinking?
Always use a specialist delicate wool cycle with cool water and minimal agitation and spin - never a standard cold wash. Shrinking is almost always caused by too much movement in the drum, which makes the fibres felt together. If hand-washing, use cold water and a wool-specific detergent, and avoid wringing.
My blanket has a knot in it, is this normal?
Finding knots in the warp threads is a normal part of weaving blankets on traditional looms in small batches as our skilled artisans knot the threads by hand. It's really to be considered part of the charm of artisanal weaving vs. mass production and we embrace the traditional method of doing things by hand.
How do I care for Pure Wool Blankets?
Air: regularly shake out your blanket to remove dust and refresh the fibres - wool is naturally odour-resistant, so airing helps you avoid washing more than necessary. Hand wash: use cold water and a wool-specific detergent, gently agitating without wringing to avoid felting. Machine wash: if labelled machine washable, use a delicate wool cycle - a specialist short cycle with cool water and minimal agitation and spin, never a standard cold wash. Avoid fabric conditioners, which can clog natural fibres. Drying: remove promptly, lay flat on a towel and roll to squeeze out excess water, then hang to dry with even weight distribution - never wring or tumble dry. Storage: fold and store in a breathable cotton bag with a natural moth deterrent like cedarwood or lavender. Pilling: gently remove bobbles by hand or with a wool comb. We don't recommend using wool blankets as sofa or chair covers, as friction causes premature wear and pilling.
How do I care for Cotton Blankets?
Machine wash at 30°C on a short cycle, separately to preserve colour. Hang to dry naturally - for an even softer finish, you can give it an optional short cold tumble dry afterwards to fluff the fibres. Pilling can occur in high-friction areas; remove gently with a fabric shaver or by hand. We don't recommend using cotton blankets as sofa or chair covers, as friction causes premature wear and pilling.
How do I care for Merino Lambswool Blankets & Scarves?
Air your blanket or scarf regularly - wool is naturally odour-resistant, so this helps you avoid dry cleaning more than necessary. Merino wool is a delicate fibre, so we recommend professional dry cleaning only. For minor marks, blot gently with a clean, damp cloth rather than rubbing. Store folded in a breathable cotton bag, ideally with a natural moth deterrent like cedarwood or lavender. Pilling can develop with use - remove gently by hand or with a wool comb. We don't recommend using merino blankets as sofa or chair covers, as friction causes premature wear and pilling.
Why is the edge of my small throw coming loose?
Some of our small throws are made by cutting a full-size throw in half. We pull out the loose warp threads on the cut side up to the first tassel, which acts as a stopper. If you spot any loose threads, you can safely pull them away up to that first tassel - because of the way the tassels are twisted and felted, the blanket won't unravel any further.
My new blanket smells of wool - is this normal?
Yes. Wool contains lanolin, a natural oil, and some people notice a slightly 'sheepy' smell when a blanket is first unwrapped. We don't use harsh chemicals in making our blankets. Simply air it outside on a dry day for a day or two and the smell will fade. Please avoid fabric conditioner, which clogs wool fibres.
What's the difference between wool and merino lambswool?
We use three types of wool: pure sheep's wool (sheared from any breed or age), lambswool (from a lamb's first shearing, so finer and softer), and merino lambswool (from the merino breed specifically, producing especially fine, long and soft fibres). Merino lambswool is the softest and lightest of the three, while pure wool tends to be thicker and fluffier.
Where are your blankets made?
All of our wool blankets, throws and scarves are woven in the British Isles, at three historic mills in Wales, Yorkshire and Ireland - among the last of their kind, still weaving fine wool cloth as they have for generations. Our Cloud Cotton blankets are woven in Lancashire.
Where does the wool come from?
We source most of the wool for our blankets from New Zealand and South Africa, where sheep are specifically bred for the softness and fineness of their fleece, and welfare standards are high - the sheep roam freely and the wool is mulesing-free. Our 100% British Wool collection uses wool sourced exclusively from UK farms, from Suffolk and Romney sheep, certified and traceable through a licence from British Wool.
Is your merino wool mulesing-free?
Yes - our merino wool comes from New Zealand and South Africa, both of which ban the practice of mulesing and maintain high animal welfare standards, so the sheep roam freely.
Which blankets are softest?
This is a tricky question with no simple answer! Technically our merino lambswool blankets are softest, as the fibres are longer and finer, giving a smoother finish. However, many customers love our thicker and fluffier pure wool throws, which remain our best-sellers. If you find wool irritating, our Cloud Cotton blankets, made from brushed recycled cotton, are a lovely alternative. Read more in our Why Wool guide.
What are armchair throws?
Armchair throws are smaller versions of our most popular blanket designs. The 70cm x 183cm size is perfect as a knee rug, around your shoulders, or as a runner at the end of the bed.
What are merino lambswool blankets?
Our merino lambswool blankets are the softest in our range – woven from the fine, long fibres of merino sheep for a smooth, lightweight finish that's still wonderfully warm. Shop our Merino Lambswool collection.
Is wool environmentally friendly?
Yes. Wool is a completely natural, renewable fibre - a sheep only needs grass and water to grow a new fleece each year, unlike synthetic fabrics which start as petrochemicals and fossil fuels. At the end of its life, wool can be recycled and re-spun into yarn, and even in landfill it biodegrades completely within 3-4 months, compared to synthetic fibres which take decades to break down and shed microplastics.
What's the difference between a throw and a blanket?
In everyday use the terms are often interchangeable, but a throw is typically a smaller, more decorative piece used on an armchair or sofa, while a blanket is generally larger and designed to provide warmth on a bed. Our small and large sizes work well as throws, while our XL size (150 x 250cm) is better suited as a full bed blanket. We don't recommend using them to sit on or as protective covers, as friction causes pilling.
What is the warmest type of blanket?
Pure wool is naturally the warmest choice thanks to its insulating, moisture-wicking fibres, and our fluffier pure wool throws are our warmest style. Merino lambswool is nearly as warm but lighter and smoother, alpaca is remarkably warm for its weight due to the hollow structure of the fibres, and cotton is the better choice for breathable warmth rather than heavy insulation, ideal for warmer months.
Which blanket is best for hot sleepers or summer use?
Our recycled Cloud Cotton blankets are a great choice for warmer months - they're breathable, and made from soft brushed recycled cotton woven in Lancashire, offering cosy comfort without the heavier insulation of a wool blanket. Otherwise our merino and alpaca blankets are lightweight and luxurious.
What should I look for in a luxury wool blanket?
Look for natural fibres over synthetics, a traceable origin (ours are woven in Wales, Yorkshire and Ireland), and fine, closely woven yarns such as merino lambswool for extra softness. Weight and drape matter too - a well-made wool blanket should feel substantial without being stiff. Our Merino Lambswool collection is made from luxurious merino lambswool for exactly this reason.
Do you sell cashmere blankets?
The British Blanket Company doesn't sell cashmere blankets at present. Our alpaca blankets are a great alternative, being extremely light, soft, and sustainable. We do however stock a range of cashmere clothing and accessories.
Can you be allergic to wool? Is it safe for sensitive skin?
A true wool allergy is rare - most people who find wool itchy are reacting to coarser fibres rather than the wool itself. If you have sensitive skin, our alpaca blankets are a good choice as alpaca contains no lanolin, and merino lambswool is finer and smoother than pure wool. For a completely wool-free option, our Cloud Cotton blankets are made from soft brushed recycled cotton.
Is wool warmer than a fleece or synthetic throw?
Wool is naturally breathable as well as insulating, so it keeps you warm without making you overheat the way synthetic fibres like polyester or acrylic often can. Wool fibres trap warm air for genuine insulation, while synthetic throws are essentially woven plastic that regulates temperature less naturally. Wool is also naturally flame-resistant, resists odour and stains so needs washing less often, and is fully biodegradable - unlike synthetic fibres, which shed microplastics every time they're washed.
Can I have my blanket embroidered or personalised?
We don't offer embroidery or personalisation ourselves, but many customers have had their blanket embroidered by a local embroidery company - the kind that stitch school uniforms and sports kits - with lovely results. For corporate orders with a logo, our Trade Team can recommend a stitching partner.
Do you currently sell wool or merino scarves?
Yes - we currently offer two ranges of merino lambswool scarves, both handwoven in Donegal, Ireland: the Oversized Blanket Scarf (70 x 230cm, £85, 11 colourways) and the Herringbone Scarf (29 x 224cm, £45, 8 colourways). We also stock wool wraps in the same collection. All are made from the same soft, durable merino lambswool as our blankets and throws, so they make a natural pairing or gift add-on. Shop the full range in our Scarves & Wraps collection.
What are the benefits of pure wool blankets?
Wool is naturally insulating, breathable, moisture-wicking and sustainable. It keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer, making it ideal for year-round use. Our Clifton, Totterdown, Wildweave and Rainbow Stripe blanket collections are all made in the British Isles using 100% pure new wool.
Are wool blankets soft or itchy?
If you love the natural feel wool, you'll find these blankets soft and snuggly. These blankets have a brushed finish which feels fluffy and lofty. Some people with sensitive skin may prefer merino wool, alpaca or cotton, which are smoother and less fuzzy.
What are the best uses for wool blankets?
Wool blankets are perfect for beds, sofas, or as an extra layer of natural warmth in your living space. They come in an array of colours and weave patterns, as well as being machine washable with care.
What are the recycled wool blankets made from?
Our popular random recycled wool blankets are woven from leftover wool yarns saved from the spinning industry. These remnants are collected and woven in random colourways to create beautiful, sustainable wool blankets that help reduce waste.
Do the recycled wool blankets feel different to pure new wool?
Some of our remnant yarns come from producers of rugs and upholstery fabrics, so our recycled wool blankets tend to have a more rugged texture than our virgin wool options. They're tough, easy to care for and perfect for everyday use, especially as an outdoor companion, or for pets.
Why choose a recycled wool blanket?
They're ideal if you're looking for a more affordable and eco-conscious option that still delivers on natural wool warmth and British-made quality.
What are the benefits of recycled cotton blankets?
Our Cloud Cotton blankets are made from recycled cotton, which is soft, breathable and sustainable. Cotton blankets are ideal for warmer months or for those who prefer a non-wool option. Recycled cotton is a sustainable alternative to virgin cotton and takes up to 80% less energy and water to produce.
Are cotton blankets warm enough for winter?
Yes, our recycled cotton blankets have a brushed finish that makes them extremely soft to the touch, as well as lifting the fibres to make them warm and snug on cold nights. They have a satisfying weight and thickness, while remaining breathable.
Where are your cotton blankets made?
Our Recycled Cloud Cotton Blankets are proudly woven in Lancashire, England on traditional jacquard looms.
What are the advantages of alpaca blankets?
Alpaca fibres are long and silky, creating beautifully light and soft blankets. They're naturally hypoallergenic as they contain no lanolin, making them a great option for those with skin that's sensitive or irritated by wool.
How do alpaca blankets compare to cashmere?
Alpaca is often compared to cashmere for its soft feel and light weight, with the added advantage of being more durable and resistant to pilling. Alpaca is considered more sustainable than cashmere too, as alpaca have less environmental impact when grazing the land than cashmere goats.
Are alpaca blankets luxurious?
Yes, alpaca blankets are very luxurious – they feel soft and silky to the touch, with a light and gentle drape. They're ideal as an extra-special gift.
How warm are alpaca blankets?
Alpaca blankets are remarkably warm for their weight, thanks to the hollow structure of alpaca fibres and the microscopic air pockets that run through them. As a result, alpaca blankets are warmer gram-for-gram than sheep's wool but often feel lighter and less bulky.
What are the picnic blankets made from?
Our picnic blankets feature a pure wool top layer that's woven in England to the same quality as our interior blankets. To this we add a soft-touch polyester canvas backing, and real leather carry straps for easy transport.
Are picnic blankets waterproof?
The backing is waterproof and flexible, designed to protect against damp grass or sand without that plasticky feel you get from cheaper alternatives. If it gets muddy, it's easy to wipe off with a damp sponge.
What should I look for in a high-quality picnic blanket?
Look for a wool top for comfort, a soft waterproof backing, and real leather carry straps. A generous size and durable British-made quality are key for long-lasting use. Avoid flimsy materials and picnic blankets made overseas, where the quality won't match handmade blankets made in the UK.
Will the price be shown on the delivery note?
No - for UK orders, we don't print prices on the delivery paperwork, so blankets sent as gifts arrive ready to give directly to the recipient. (For orders shipped outside the UK, we are required to include prices for customs purposes.)
Can I include a gift message?
Yes - every order includes the option of a free gift message at checkout, which we handwrite on a postcard and include in your parcel.
Do you do gift wrapping?
UK customers can choose from our range of Blanket Gift Boxes, which pair a blanket with curated extras in a colourful gift box. Or you can add a Cotton Gift Bag to your order on the product page and at checkout. Gift boxes and some gifting extras can't be shipped outside the UK.
What packaging do you use?
Our standard packaging for blankets and scarves is a thick paper mailing bag with a patterned design, so our parcels look attractive arriving in the post. Please be aware that our mailing bags include our brand name on the outside. Larger orders will be packaged in cardboard boxes. We try to re-use boxes from incoming deliveries where possible. We are always striving to make our business more eco-friendly and all our outer packaging can now be re-used and recycled. If you're giving a gift, we recommend our Gift Box for Blankets (UK customers only), or add a Cotton Gift Bag to your order.

Baby Blanket Gift Sets are also available.
What is a cellular baby blanket and why choose one?
A cellular blanket is woven in an open, honeycomb-style weave that improves breathability and airflow, which is why they're a traditional choice for babies. Our Organic Cotton Cellular Baby Blanket is made at one of the last remaining British mills still producing this traditional weave.
Do you have blankets suitable for dogs or other pets?
Yes - our random recycled wool blankets have a more rugged texture than our virgin wool ranges, making them tough, easy to care for and ideal as an outdoor companion or pet blanket. We also offer dedicated Dog Gift Sets pairing a blanket with a lead or toy.
What is The British Blanket Company doing to be more sustainable?
Sustainability runs through the range: our recycled wool blankets are woven from leftover yarns saved from the spinning industry, and our Cloud Cotton range uses recycled cotton that takes up to 80% less energy and water to produce than virgin cotton. All wool is mulesing-free, sourced from farms with high animal welfare standards, and our outer packaging is now fully reusable and recyclable. More broadly, the company's mission is to help regenerate traditional weaving in the UK.
Who founded The British Blanket Company?
The British Blanket Company was founded in 2015 by siblings Bethan and Joe, who grew up in the Somerset countryside. Bethan previously wrote for Ideal Home magazine and Joe worked in e-commerce development before they combined their skills to start the family business. The company won Family Business of the Year in 2019 and has been invited to 10 Downing Street.
Is The British Blanket Company a genuinely British brand?
Yes. The British Blanket Company is a family-run business founded in Somerset in 2015, and every blanket is woven in the British Isles at three traditional mills in Wales, Yorkshire and Ireland. The wool itself is sourced from New Zealand and South Africa (with a dedicated 100% British Wool collection sourced entirely from UK farms), but all weaving, design and finishing takes place in Britain and Ireland.
What makes The British Blanket Company's wool ethically sourced?
All merino and pure wool comes from New Zealand and South Africa, both of which have high animal welfare standards and ban mulesing. The 100% British Wool collection uses wool from UK farms (Suffolk and Romney sheep breeds) with full traceability under licence from British Wool. Recycled wool and cotton ranges also reduce waste from the spinning and textile industry.
Why choose a British-made wool blanket over an imported one?
British-made wool blankets are woven at mills with centuries of expertise, combining traditional techniques with modern quality control - it shows in the durability and finish of the finished blanket. Choosing British-made also supports the UK's historic wool weaving industry, which has declined significantly due to globalisation and cheaper overseas synthetic production, helping preserve traditional weaving skills and local jobs. British mills are held to higher environmental and employment standards than many overseas factories, and buying local avoids the air miles of importing from further afield.
